Speech and Language Hartlepool

All children deserve a good start in life. Learning to talk, listen and understand helps children grow and do well. When children can speak clearly, share ideas and play with others, it helps them learn at school. Good language skills early on help children succeed later.

Let's Get Talking!

We know that it can be hard to know where to start if you are worried about your child’s development. If you think your child is facing challenges with talking and understanding words, we are here to help you.

Child Development

Is your child on track? Click here to see Speech and Language UK’s development stages and learn how children usually communicate at different ages. If you have any worries, you’re not alone – many children develop at different speeds. Friendly, non‑judgemental support is available, and we’re here to help.

Speech and Language UK have FREE resources and services that can help with understanding what to look out for, child’s speech, language and communication milestones, how to get support and even some simple ways you can help your child at home.

Limit use of Screens!

Limit total screen time for young children, wherever possible. The government has published new, evidence‑informed guidance to help parents of under 5s navigate screen time, offering practical advice to support informed choices to help little brains develop healthy screen habits.

Avoid young children using screens alone as it reduces opportunities for social time and active play. You can try watching and discussing content together with your child as it supports their development and helps you protect them from harmful content.

Hartlepool Libraries

You can visit your local library to choose a book to read with your child. Libraries are free, welcoming spaces with lots of books for all ages, so it’s easy to find something your child will enjoy. Reading together helps build your child’s speech, language and listening skills, supports their imagination, and strengthens your bond. Sharing stories regularly can also help children feel confident and ready to learn as they grow.
